Max Velocity Sugar-Free Energy Drink Review

Today I picked up a few cans of Max Velocity Sugar-Free, a “private label” energy drinks from the Albertson’s grocery store chain (which, in my opinion, is probably the best grocery store in Las Vegas). I’d heard that it’s a “Red Bull-alternative” and, since it was on sale for just 88 cents a can, I grabbed several. Here’s my review…

Taste: Not bad at all. Very similar to the taste of Red Bull, which I’ve always liked. I’ve read on other sites that the sugar-free version is actually better than the regular version.

Texture: Again, very similar to Red Bull. Plenty of carbonation and not overly thick.

Energy: When I saw that Max Velocity was a private-label brand, I kind of assumed that it wouldn’t have as much of an energy kick to it. Well, I was wrong. It has plenty of caffeine, taurine and B-vitamins and the energy boost was substantial (but not overwhelming like larger energy drinks).

Bottom Line: What sets this energy drink apart from others is its low price. I’ve always thought that that the prices of energy drinks are outrageous. No way should a drink that comes in a can as small as Red Bull cost $2-$3 a can — no matter how good it tastes! Although the regular price of Max Velocity Sugar-Free is $1.49, I have a feeling that it will usually be on sale and $.88 per can is the perfect price I think. I will definitely be stocking up on this good-tasting, energy-boosting drink in the near future!

I totally agree. The bonus is being carb/sugar free. Why add the unecessary calories when you can be sugar free.

every word you said is right, it is exactly like red bull taste and texture, but I felt that it gave me much more energy than red bull, when I drink red bull in the morning even though it sugar free, by five clock i am dead on the couch, red bull did not give enough energy to excercize the 2 hours mI do, it is just helped me to get by the day and not be down and cranky, max velocity did much more , I really liked it.

I agree with you 100%. I had been buying the sugar free Rock Star 16 ounce cans, but I found that they a) were too expensive, even when on sale, and b) made me feel like I was on drugs or something, because the energy boost was too overwhelming. I have since switched to the sugar free Max Velocity and I am a big fan of it. Plus, the cheetah on the can is cute!

Cheryl, Jewel (Albertson’s) was recently purchased by Supervalu. Because of the restructuring and FTC requirments a lot of stores are closing. If you try CVS (part of Supervalu the Supervalu buyout) or Cub Foods (Cub Chicago was bought by Albertson’s a few years ago), you might find it there. I’m from Central Illinois also, but i don’t know what stores are in Springfield.

FYI Shaw’s in New England has them on sale this week at 67 cents per can. Oddly, a 4-pack is still $4.

They have it at the Shoppers near me in Alexandria, VA for $1/can. I’ve pretty much given up on Red Bull now. Good stuff :)

Just bought 12 cans at Jewel for $5.00 for 4 cans…It’s a great deal.. The first two cans I drank in the store so I could taste the difference between the sugur-free “Uncaged” and the Regular Max Velocity mentioned in previous posts…The Uncaged tastes like Mountain Dew and seems to have more carbonation which I’m partial to since I’m a big fan of Rockstar brand Sugerfree…This Generic brand seems like a really good alternative if you want to pay the smart price as oppose to getting ripped off by the top shelf brands….

It tastes like I liked the bottom of my shoe. As far as energy drinks go, it is cack.

Being a computer science major at Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville i require gratuitous amounts of energy. Last semester it was red bull and 0 dollars in my bank account. The start of this semester it was coffee….

Then my friend i always program with had a can sitting out when i came over one day, i looked at it and saw “max Velocity” and a cheetah on the front. Crazy stuff. So i try some

Basically i have 2 16oz cans a day now especially towards midterms.

Anyways, our school mascot being Cougars, we dubbed Max Velocity “Cougar Blood” “Blood of Cougars” or “Cheetah blood”, The later because it actually is a cheetah not a cougar on the front…

    great stuff.

I absolutely despise RED BULL - I call it gummi bear juice! And thus never liked much of any of the common energy drinks. Then I found Max Velocity Sugar Free and LOVE IT!!!!! Not only does it taste much better (and not like gummi bears) than Red Bull but it also is not only my picker upper but also my stomach soother, make me feel better when down drink, etc. etc. The only thing it doesn’t work as well as other energy drinks (e.g. Red Bull) for is mixed drinks…not strong enough for that.

I got in the Max Velocity habit due to regular (and often quite lengthy) sales of the 16 oz. cans of Max Velocity for $1.00 at the local (Chicago area) Albertson’s chain: Jewel-Osco, and I agree with you: excellent taste in every flavor, both sugar and sugar-free.

Pretty darn good for a store brand!
