Pandora.com: A GREAT site for fans of strange music… like me

I love obscure music. I grew up listening to cajun zydeco, classic rythm and blues, 60’s ska, and “lover’s rock” reggae. In recent years I’ve become a big fan of Brazilian folk music (like forró) as well several other types of caribbean and latin music styles. I simply love music… especially the kind that most people would consider a little “strange.”

The hard part about liking strange and exotic music though is learning about (and listening to) all the great “lesser-known” artists and songs that are out there. This is especially true when the music is in another language! I’ve spent thousands of hours of my life researching bands, songs, record labels, etc. trying to find good stuff I haven’t heard before… always with the nagging feeling that I’m missing out on lots and lots of great music.

Well, it looks like at least some of my problems have been solved. Pandora.com is a new online music service, based around the “Music Genome Project,” that helps you find great music that is similar to the music you already love. All you have to do is type in the name of one of your favorite songs or artists and the site gives you recommendations on other similar songs and artists. Not only that, but they allow you to actually listen to the full songs for free!

I’ve used a lot of online music services before, but I have to say that Pandora is the best I’ve seen. It’s genius and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to expand their musical knowledge and get more out of life. Enjoy
