My armpits are somewhat sensitive to deodorants. I have noticed even the safer brands can cause problems with continuous use. As a man it is embarrassing to shave armpits but I have found this helps. After using TOMs for several years I also have experienced a reaction recently (similar to the original poster). I will probably stop using for a short while and then go back to it. Other than TOMS, the only other brand I found that is pretty safe is J.A.S.O.N., an Australian import found in Kroger stores in the health food section. Has anybody else found any other safe brands for those of us who suffer from sensitivity?

Hey there! It is my first comment right here so I just desired to provide a speedy shout out and tell you I seriously enjoy reading your posts. Can you recommend any other blogs/websites/forums that deal using the exact same topics? Enjoy it!

I am currently experiencing many of the same symptoms described by others. I've been using Toms natural deodorant with hops for just over a month and I hadn't noticed anything too bad until my wife pointed it out to me. One night at the dinner table she says "I didn't know you had such a big birth mark under your arm" I said "what?! I don't" and rushed to the bathroom to find that BOTH of my armpits had big red spots with skin peeling. Like one of the posters said it looked like a bad sunburn. I didn't have a real bad burning sensation, more like menthol was rubbed under my arm , but it looks terrible. I just discovered it and the only thing I've done different was switched deodorants a month ago so I know Toms is the culprit.

For the longest time I always wanted to switch to a alum free deodorant because I knew it was not good for me. Stumbled apon Tom's it was the most expensive the store had so i bought it. After the
second use I noticed a burn like sensation. Not very strong but it was there. I had worse from commercial brands. Well it went away but other side effects popped up like peeling skin and redness all over my pits.
After some heavy reading seems like the zinc ricinoleate is bad news bears in this story. Switching over to honeysuckle rose hope that helps this ol chap.

I experienced the same thing, but because I'm a longtime Tom's of Maine user I experimented with several varieties and went back to the old fallback of the unscented deodorant version. The rash went away. Two scented versions caused the very painful, burning rash. (It took me awhile to develop the allergy).

So comparing the ingredients I discovered the culprit. It's Zinc ricinoleate. This is what causes the rash.

If you buy the unscented Tom's of Maine deodorant, it doesn't have the Zinc Ricinoleate, and causes no rash...

I get what you're saying about "natural" ingredients. Society today has a general belief that if something is "natural", it's good for you. But that's not true. Poison ivy, Aluminum, Zinc ricinoleate, oily tars, urine, dung, black mold, and rabies are "natural". We need to get off of our collective "natural is better" kick, and make a right judgment that realizes that we need to distinguish between poison and nutrition, whether it's natural or man-made.

How is this going on 3 years later!!! I thought I was crazy having an reaction to a "natural" deodorant. This makes me mad, either use chemicals & be fine, or use the expensive natural stuff and have fire in my armpits. May I suggest to any one looking for a bit of relief, cornstarch has helped sooth my under arms. I would like to know how to file a complaint as well.

I can't link web addresses on this site, but you should contact the FDA. (Google "FDA Consumer Complaint" - it should be the first link). They have a consumer complaint page with phone numbers for the various local offices. If you call, you can leave a message or an email address may also be given.

I did and met with an investigator who told me that Tom's story was that they hardly get any complaints about this.

I have been using Toms deodorant for about a month, and have noticed how bad me armpits are peeling! I was so concerned until I googled peeling armpits and found out it is the Toms deodorant I have been using! I will quit using it now. where do I go to, so I can complain?
